Abstract

Circular economy is a key factor in promoting sustainable development. It is an economic system that seeks to eliminate waste and create a closed-loop system where resources are kept in use for as long as possible. It helps to reduce the environmental impact of production and consumption. In addition to reducing waste and emissions, the circular economy also has the potential to create new economic opportunities. Crude glycerol is a low-value by-product of the biodiesel production process. It is a mixture of glycerol and impurities such as alcohols, fatty acids, salts, soaps, and water. Crude glycerol has potential use as a carbon source for biofuel production through bioconversion processes, but its impurities are a challenge to the process and affect the energy output. The article highlights the negative impact of impurities in crude glycerol on the bioconversion process and the various pre-treatment techniques that have been developed to remove the impurities and improve energy production. Furthermore, the energy balance for pre-treatment, green energy from crude/pre-treated glycerol towards circular economy and environmental sustainability are also discussed.
