Million Plus Population Cities of India: An Analysis of Economic Performance and Quality of Life

Abstract

This article seeks to explore the performance of the million plus population cities in India in the economic dimensions. Forty-five such cities governed by municipal corporations were studied the data provided by the Census of India for the years 2001 and 2011. Two indices are constructed to examine the economic performance and the quality of life, Index of Economic Performance (IEP) and Quality of Life Index (QoLI), respectively. The analysis highlights the significant role played by small and medium cities in India in the generation of wealth and employment, while several large cities continue to have higher values for the IEP. However, the ancillary cities close to them emerge as better performers. Further, regression results show QoLI explains 26% of the variation in the IEP.
