Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to create an image of the relationship between biogas (as one of the biofuels produced to replace in time conventional fuels) and innovation within this field. The analysis is based on studying the main flow of the literature written and published on this subject for almost two decades. The output consists in constructing two relevant maps, one showing links between biogas, innovation and other concepts specific to this field, and the other one presenting the key moment in time, when the biogas-innovation relation was the center of attention, focus and interest of researchers. The paper also presents facts about biogas production and patents filed for biogas technologies. Among the most interesting findings and insights revealed by maps, there is one showing how research evolved from connecting biogas production to sustainability in the past and to circular economy in the present; another one showing how both biogas and innovation are characterized by a strong relatedness to ‘developing countries’ as a keyword; and another one revealing no direct link from innovation to circular economy.
