Transport modes in Portuguese international trade: Insights from firm-level data

Abstract

International trade of goods involves choices relative to the mode of transport. These choices are complex and depend on variables like distance, time of transit, transport costs and characteristics of the firm and the good. Although very important, this dimension of international trade has been relatively less studied than others. In this article we take a descriptive perspective and portray the choices of modes of transport by Portuguese international traders of goods. This granular analysis is innovative and it is made possible by the availability of an international trade longitudinal database with information on the transport mode used at the firm-countryproduct level, combined with novel information related to the determinants of transport mode choices. Road and sea are the main transport modes and their shares have been broadly stable along the last three decades. However, there is heterogeneity in the choices of the transport mode across characteristics of the firm and the product.
