Abstract

[eng] A widespread controversy is going on about the extension, in the last few years, of paid work for women. The battle is between those who believe women belong at home, and those in increasing numbers who are favorable to women's employment. The increase in unemployment has fanned the flame of the debate. Thanks to Louis Dirn's matrix, it is possible to examine the consequences of women's work systematically on all sectors of the society. This study shows that this phenomenon affects the entire society since it is one the most powerful boosts for its vitality. Partisans of an, improbable, return to a former situation for women would see their hopes overcasted by serious secondary effects on the economy. Certain institutional transformations are necessary in order to soothe the contradictory tensions working women put up with.
