Abstract

[eng] Economists define the « informal » economy by applying the same rules as they use to evaluate activities which do enter their accounts. The difficulty which this implies might be significant since those categories are, almost by definition, not as relevant to the measurement and explanation of these phenomena. Sociologists propose an alternative viewpoint which recognizes explicitly the strategies employed by the actors whose activities they wish to analyse. For example, exchanges which take place within a social network can be understood in terms of barter or gift exchange and in such cases conventional national accounting procedures may not provide much insight. An analysis of the social mechanisms at work, though, may give some guide to the evolution of the « informal » economy and allow us to understand, for example, the implications of unemployment for such activities as home-improvement and the cultivation of kitchen-gardens.
