Abstract

[eng] This article surveys the theories of labor market segmentation as they have been developed in the United States. It distinguishes two broad categories of approaches : The Radical Theory of economists and the New Structuralism of Sociologists. These theories show that differenciations which take place in the labor market are the result of the own dynamics of the productive system, and particularly of the inequalities in the economic power of firms. They differ however in their subsequent analysis. Radical Theory focuses on the history of the labor process whereas the New Structuralism either in its empirical or in its theorical form, excludes any reference to time.
