Abstract

[eng] The transmission of social status : the ladder and the gap - If there is, in effect, a social ladder whose rungs are to be climbed, there is also a significant gap given that movement is practically nil between extreme categories. Almost no cadre's son becomes a laborer; few laborers' sons become cadres. Between agricultural workers and other categories, it is a one-way street : one does not become a farmer if one's father is not one already. Among cadres, the professions assure their sons the greatest social success. In the intermediate professions, teachers' sons have the best chances of a rise in social status.
