Abstract

[eng] The elderly, from family life to isolation - In 1982, ten million people were sixty years of age or more. This population is going to grow considerably in the years to come. For their lodging, the elderly have recourse more and more to specialized institutions such as old age homes, nursing homes or housing for the elderly. However, 95 % of them live in ordinary dwellings, in couples in more than half of the cases. Since women have much more chance of surviving their spouses, numerous women live alone. The elderly who do not form a couple and who are lodged by a family are most often ascendants of one of the members of that family. But the isolation of the elderly population is becoming more pronounced: in 1962, people living alone were less numerous than those living with relatives; in 1982, they were twice as numerous.
