Abstract

[eng] Working women in 1982 do not have fewer children than those in 1968 - In fourteen years, the average number of children of married women between the ages of 30 and 34 has dropped 10 %: it went from 2.2 in 1968 to 2.0 in 1982. However, if this average is calculated separately for working women and for those who do not work outside the home, it becomes evident that in each category the figure has scarcely changed. This observation is applicable within the context of all social environments, with the expception of agriculture. In Western France, Brittany and the regions of the Loire, women have the most children. In Ile-de-France they have the fewest. The distance between the place of business and the domicile is in direct correlation with the number of dependents: the size of the family decreases when the distance increases.
