Wie viel Industrie braucht das Land?

Abstract

The facts and analyses of the significance of industry in an international comparison indicate that there is no general answer to the question of how much industry an economy needs. The appropriate, or rather the optimal, role of industry can only be made plausible under the specific sectoral and historical conditions existing in a country. Consequently, the currently high significance of industry in Germany may be explained by the special focus on research-intensive and capital-goods oriented branches and the increased specific inclusion in regional and global value-added chains. Simultaneously, an examination of investment activity reveals the fragility of the current situation. Although in the USA and Great Britain the share of industrial output has declined, the investment activity is on the rise. Germany is currently a strong industrial location, but it seems that if present weaknesses in investment are not overcome, it will be on the decline.
