Abstract

In 2006 labour relations in the iron and steel industry in North Rhine-Westphalia broke new ground by establishing their collective agreement concerning the impact of demographic changes. In Germany this was the first collective agreement on this topic. In the article a brief description of recent demographic trends is first presented, followed by the background and details of the collective agreement. Thereafter workplace arrangements and crucial fields of action in the steel companies are described based on the results of a (recurring) survey and 10 case studies. Finally the authors examine the power of the collective agreement as an instrument of bargaining policy and discuss its role in managing the impact of demographic changes.
