Abstract

Cortical mapping: subcellular organization The mapping of neuronal connections in the cerebral cortex has traditionally relied on electrophysiological recordings performed on brain slices, in which long-range connections are severed. Karel Svoboda and colleagues have now adapted a recent optogenetic method to map long-range inputs onto various segments of the dendritic arbours of cortical pyramidal neurons. They find that specific inputs tend to cluster in distinct domains within dendritic trees. Such spatial segregation of different axonal inputs within dendrites may strengthen coupling of coherent cell populations during neuronal information processing and learning.
