Gasto en defensa y renta en los países de la Alianza Atlántica (1960-2002)

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza la relación entre el gasto en defensa y la renta de los quince miembros de la OTAN entre 1960 y 2002 con un tratamiento homogéneo que permite hacer comparaciones entre países que pertenecen a una misma alianzamilitar. La estimación simultánea de la demanda de defensa con la ayuda del método de regresiones aparentemente relacionadas divide la muestra entre países de alta y de baja elasticidad renta. Estos últimos incluyen a las grandes potencias económicas y militares dentro de la Alianza. En conjunto, la renta explica bien la demanda de gasto en defensa —la principal excepción es Estados Unidos— y el comienzo de la posguerra fría aparece como una inflexión relevante en la estimación.
