The impact of everyday AI-based smart speaker use on the well-being of older adults living alone

Abstract

This study examined the association between the use of AI speakers and depression and loneliness in older adults living alone. Secondary data based on the AI Care Service project conducted by the local government in South Korea were used. A total of 291 older adults living alone (M = 76.69, SD = 5.83; 73.9% female) were included in this longitudinal analysis in two waves: at the “NUGU Candle” speaker launch and two months later. Generalized estimating equations were applied to explore changes in depression and loneliness over time between frequent and intermittent users. AI-based smart speaker use was associated with decreased depression and loneliness. Depression change over time was significant in both frequent and intermittent users. Loneliness improved at follow-up in frequent users. AI speaker use frequency and its effects on depression and loneliness in older adults living alone should be considered in future psychological interventions.
