Comparative analysis of third-level digital divide among Korean older adults: Capital-based approach

Abstract

This study examines Ragnedda's digital capital and 5Cs theory, which addresses the third-level digital divide through the lens of digital capital. Our objective is to assess the usage of the Internet and digital technologies among older adults in Korea and analyze the digital divide. LDA, one of the topic modeling techniques, was used to analyze in-depth interviews with 206 older adults residing in Busan and Seoul, which are two major cities in Korea. The study identified high and low utilization of capital and determined the differences between the cities. In Seoul and Busan, high utilization was observed for four of the five capitals (social, economic, cultural, and personal), while political capital had low utilization. However, in contrast to Seoul, Busan exhibited low utilization not only for political capital but also for economic, cultural capital. The 5C theory of digital device usage among seniors in Korea revealed regional disparities in digital capital between the country's two major cities. To supplement formalized equal-scale measures of the digital divide, we recommend conducting in-depth interviews to collect atypical text data.
