Affirming cultural values for health: The case of firearm restriction in suicide prevention

Abstract

•Messaging increased likelihood of locking up firearms for suicide prevention.•It also increased likelihood of participants engaging their family physician to help prevent suicide.•Effects were stronger for political conservatives and gun rights advocates.•Perceived value similarity between message source and recipient mediated effects.•Health behaviors were facilitated when regarded as consistent with cultural values.
