Abstract

Recently developed multilevel inverter topologies have drawn major attention in the industry and research, as these are moving into practicable technology for many medium and high-power applications. The main objective of this paper is to provide an overview of transformer based single DC source multilevel inverter (T-SDCMI) topologies which come under the special category of the multilevel inverter. In T-SDCMI, single DC source reduces the cost, size, weight and increase reliability including the advantages of the transformer, which is not possible in symmetrical, asymmetrical and hybrid multilevel inverters which are already available in the literature. From the configuration point of view, T-SDCMI topologies are categorized into three groups: H-bridge based T-SDCMI, three-leg inverter based T-SDCMI and other configurations based T-SDCMI. State of the art with challenges of each topology is discussed categorically. Moreover, in each topology, drawbacks and advantages have been discussed in detail. Finally, the comparative study of existing T-SDCMI topologies has been carried out to select the best topology in terms of different performance parameters.
