Abstract

Considering the influence of the online and offline interaction of individuals, time-varying structure of networks and the diversity of the individuals’ characteristics on the rumor propagation process, a more comprehensive model based on the activity-driven network is proposed in this paper. By means of the mean-field theory, the rumor propagation process is theoretically analyzed and the criticality condition of the widespread of rumors is quantitatively derived. To verify the theoretical results, a series of numerical simulations are conducted. The results demonstrate that the existence of online spreading channel promotes the spread of rumors and lowers the dependence of rumor spreading on the offline channel. In addition, compared with the interaction preference, the propagation ability is a more decisive factor for rumor spreading. Furthermore, within a certain range of the interaction level, the increase of the factor can significantly accelerate the spreading process; however, when the interaction level reaches a certain value, further increasing it will not exert additional influence on the rumor dynamics.
