The ripple effects of technological innovation: The case of iron ore pelletizing

Abstract

Changing part of a production system can initiate "ripples" of change in related areas as managers strive to realize the full potential of the original innovation. This paper describes the ripples stemming from one significant innovation--processing the vast stock of taconite rock to replace the depleted reserves of natural iron ore--and draws some general implications for managers from this case.
