Abstract

This study investigates the impact of information accessibility on corporate environmental protection investments. Exploiting the staggered inclusion of pilot cities under the Broadband China strategy as a positive shock to information accessibility, we find that this policy results in more environmental protection investments of firms located in pilot cities. Furthermore, enhancing environmental protection awareness and green knowledge accumulation are the underlying mechanisms. We also find that the positive association is more pronounced in state-owned firms, firms with more female executives, and firms with less foreign experience executives. Overall, our study sheds light on the environmental implications of information accessibility.
