Model of a spectrally selective decoupled photovoltaic/thermal concentrating system

Abstract

Solar energy conversion systems utilizing photovoltaics (PV) are characterized by their high unit area cost, their wavelength dependency (spectral response) and their low overall efficiency. Hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) concentrator systems are often used for the dual purpose of decreasing cost (less PV cell area) and increasing the overall solar conversion efficiency by recovering the waste heat in a thermal loop. Spectral selectivity may be applied to hybrid PV/T systems to improve the efficiency of the PV conveter, while permitting high-temperature thermal conversion. Spectrally Selective Beam Splitters (SSBS) can be used to extract that portion of the solar spectrum at which the PV converter operates with peak efficiency and utilize the remainder in a separate, high temperature collection loop that is thermally decoupled from the PV. A mathematical model of a hybrid PV/T solar concentrating system with SSBS is presented. The model performs computer simulations for parametric analyses to assess the performance of PV/T concentrating systems when exposed to a variety of conditions and to provide comparisons with the behaviors of non-SSBS systems. Examples of the application of the model to system analysis are presented.
