The logic of peasant resistance to tourism

Abstract

This study aims to explore the logic of peasant resistance to tourism. Case-oriented qualitative research was adopted, with two tourist villages selected as case studies. The study found petitioning and road blocking are two resistance methods often used by peasants. The use of physically vulnerable peasants and the behaviour of kneeling down are two tactics of peasant resistance. Lawsuits are rarely adopted due to their limitations. The logic of peasant resistance is the result of long-term practice based on a comprehensive consideration of perceived effectiveness, economy, risk perception, and trust propensity. The findings of this study shed some light on the understanding of peasant resistance to tourism, as well as contribute to the development of resistance theory.
