•Examines length-of-stay as a destination performance indicatorClarifies the relationship between length-of-stay and tourist expenditure•Identifies the optimal number of days that holiday visitors should stay•Uses an optimization rather than a maximization approach to modelling length-of-stay and tourist expenditure
