Regionale Bedeutung von Familienunternehmen in Westdeutschland

Abstract

Familienunternehmen wird eine hohe Bedeutung für die deutsche Wirtschaft beigemessen. In diesem Artikel untersuchen wir auf Kreisebene die regionale Verteilung von Familienunternehmen in Westdeutschland. Unsere empirischen Untersuchungen zeigen, dass Familienunternehmen eher in ländlichen Regionen, jedoch mit Nähe zu Oberzentren, zu finden sind. In Nordrhein-Westfalen und Baden-Württemberg ist die regionale Intensität an Familienunternehmen am höchsten. Des Weiteren sind Familienunternehmen vor allem in wirtschaftlich starken Regionen angesiedelt. Wir erklären unsere Ergebnisse mit Hilfe des organisationsökologischen Ansatzes. Die Ergebnisse unserer Studie tragen zur Diskussion über die gesamtwirtschaftliche und regionale Bedeutung von Familienunternehmen in Deutschland bei. / Family firms play an important role for the German economy. Using data on the level of districts (NUTS-3), we investigate the regional distribution of family firms in West Germany. Our empirical analyses show that family firms can be found in rather rural areas; however, a certain proximity to regional metropolis is also apparent. North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg show the highest densities of family firms. Moreover, family firms are located in economically strong regions. We explain our findings using the theory of organizational ecology. Our study contributes to the discussion about the importance of family firms for the German economy.
