La noción de racionalidad en Amartya Sen y su relación con el pensamiento de Adam Smith

Abstract

La teoría de la elección racional (TER), es insuficiente como explicación del comportamiento económico, incluso en su versión extendida (Becker). La TER se fundamenta en la maximización del interés-propio como criterio de elección y atribuye su origen al pensamiento de Adam Smith. Amartya Sen ha sido un fuerte crítico de este modelo de comportamiento tradicionalmente usado en economía. Este artículo contribuye a una mejor comprensión de la noción de racionalidad en Sen y su relación con el pensamiento de Smith. Tres ideas básicas se desarrollan en este artículo: 1) la racionalidad es un procedimiento fundamental de la justicia, 2) la racionalidad ha sido una preocupación central en el trabajo de Sen, y 3) Sen considera que su interpretación de la racionalidad es una extensión del pensamiento de Smith.
