Kurz zum Klima: Rettung aus der Tiefe?

Abstract

Die weltweite Nachfrage nach Energie stellt die Energieversorgung mit Blick auf den Klimawandel vor zunehmende Herausforderungen. Die Erde selbst stellt in ihrem Inneren eine nahezu unerschöpfliche Energiequelle bereit. Auf Grundlage geophysikalischer Prozesse strahlt der Erdkern kontinuierlich Wärmeenergie aus. Schätzungen gehen davon aus, dass etwa das 100 000-Fache des gegenwärtigen jährlichen Energieverbrauchs der Welt in der Erdkruste als (Wärme-)Energie gespeichert ist. Dieser Beitrag in der Reihe »Kurz zum Klima« widmet sich dem Entwicklungsstand und der Nutzung der technologischen Optionen sowie dem Potential der Erdwärme – auch als »Geothermie« bezeichnet. Der Aus- und Zubau von Geothermie-Anlagen verspricht aufgrund der Grundlastfähigkeit der Systeme erhebliche Klimaschutzpotentiale, da insbesondere Braun- und Steinkohlekraftwerke ersetzt würden. Zugleich ist durch die kontinuierliche Einspeisung im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen erneuerbaren Energien keine Neuausrichtung der bestehenden Versorgungsnetze erforderlich.
