Leuchttürme mit langem Schatten: Frühere DDR-Bezirksstädte haben heute noch immer fast 50 000 Einwohner mehr

Abstract

Die 1952 überraschend zu DDR-Bezirksstädten erkorenen Orte wie Neubrandenburg und Suhl profitieren bis heute von ihrem früheren Status. Die DDR konzentrierte nicht nur Verwaltungsjobs, sondern auch die Industrie auf die Hauptstädte der 14 Bezirke. Kleinere Bezirksstädte wuchsen bis zum Ende der DDR dadurch auf das Doppelte der Einwohnerzahl von Orten vormals ähnlicher Größe, die aber nicht zur Bezirksstadt wurden. Die Leuchtturmpolitik wirft ihre Schatten bis in die heutige Zeit. Frühere Bezirksstädte haben auch 30 Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung im Schnitt noch fast 50 000 Einwohnerinnen und Einwohner mehr und sind damit unverändert doppelt so groß wie die Städte, die 1952 leer ausgegangen waren.
