Abstract

The paper provides an analysis of the empirical evidence as to the employment effects of innovations at the company level. Relying on 58 studies published during the last 20 years, the empirical evidence reveals a clear result: Most studies, that is nearly 70 %, find that innovations lead to an increase of staff number, only 16 % show a decrease of labour demand. A general objection as to these results claims that they are mainly due to certain features of the indicator variables used. An ordered logistic regression examines this allegation in more detail. The following results emerge: The indicator used in order to measure the innovativeness of a firm (e.g. R&D investments or patents) does not influence the findings. In addition there is evidence that the result of a positive impact of innovations on employment does not depend on the country in question. But the outcomes vary with regard to the range of years on which the empirical analysis relies in combination with the type of innovation (product- or process-innovation). This interaction effect states that product innovations have a stronger positive influence on labour demand in the short run in comparison to process innovations. As to economic policy the results underline the importance of firms’ innovativeness for employment. Furthermore, the evidence excludes the existence of technological unemployment at the company level. Thus, there is no justification of a Luddites position of employees and unions as to innovations at the firm level.
