Change in the EU Dairy Sector Post Quota: More Milk, More Exports and a Changing Farmer Profile

Abstract

type="graphical" xml:id="euch12105-abs-0101"> Removal of EU dairy quotas in April 2015 coincided with a downturn in world market demand along with continued increases in production in key producing areas, resulting in a slump in world market prices and testing times for world dairy farmers which may continue for some time. However, the prospects for many parts of the EU dairy sector remain fundamentally good. The majority of growth will come from the nine largest producers, excluding Spain and Italy. However, with low projected demand growth in Europe, processors will need to capture shares of emerging markets in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. In the next decade EU dairy processing capacity will shift to the better production regions..
