Abstract

------------------------- Renewable energy is still more expensive than fossil-based power generation, but in order to reduce environmental burden and strategic risks it is worthwhile switching to renewable energy sources regardless of oil price developments. The energy efficiency and structure of transport will have an impact on energy demand and biomass-based fuel demand. Biofuels will for a long time be blended with conventional liquid transport fuels and will be complementary to them, not competitors stimulating the production of flex fuel vehicles. The development of the future system will be the result of a long process due to technological, financial and infrastructural shortcomings. For the next decades, transport will be based on conventional methods, namely on internal combustion engines and liquid fuels, so it is essential to improve their efficiency. The development of biogas production is influenced by the sustainability regulation for the production of the feedstock and therefore in many EU member states the use of energy crops for biogas production has been limited. In the USA and the EU, the use of agricultural by-products, such as straw, maize stalk, forest biomass and wood waste in addition to soft-stem and woody plants can be considered as feedstock in the future.
