Vita consumenda oder Vita activa? Edmund Phelps und die moralische Qualität der Marktwirtschaft

Abstract

Dieser Beitrag interpretiert Edmund Phelps – insbesondere in seinem Spätwerk – als einen wichtigen Impulsgeber der Wirtschaftsethik. Die These lautet, dass sich für Phelps die moralische Qualität der Marktwirtschaft nicht in erster Linie daran bemisst, dass sie den Mitgliedern der Gesellschaft als Konsumenten ein historisch gesehen ungeahnt hohes Wohlstandsniveau sichert und ihnen somit – im Sinne einer vita consumenda – gleichsam ein Leben in Reichtum ermöglicht. Vielmehr zeigt der Beitrag, dass Phelps‘ zufolge die Mitglieder der Gesellschaft von einer dynamischen Marktwirtschaft in allererster Linie als Produzenten profitieren, weil sie ihr Leben – im Sinne einer vita activa – in Freiheit gestalten und damit ihre kreativen Fähigkeiten und ihre persönlichen Talente bestmöglich entwickeln können. Auf diese Weise trägt ein dynamischer Kapitalismus wesentlich dazu bei, das bis auf die Antike zurückgehende Ideal persönlicher Selbstvervollkommnung zu erreichen.
