Short-Run Maquiladora Employment Dynamics

Abstract

Maquiladora sector employment in Ciudad juarez, Mexico grew substantially between January 1981 and December 1998. An ARIMA transfer function model is estimated to examine the short-run empirical characetristics of this growth. Real wages, the number of factories in operation, U.S. industrial activity, and the real currency value of the peso are found to play roles in monthly variations in maquiladora payrolls.
