Abstract

Résumé : Cet article tente d'examiner la relation entre le développement financier et la pauvreté, en étudiant leur lien direct et celui, qui passe à travers la croissance économique. Sur un échantillon de 81 pays en développement sur la période 1988-1997, les résultats des estimations économétriques soutiennent que le développement du système financier formel est susceptible de réduire l'incidence de la pauvreté absolue au delà de son effet à travers la croissance. Selon l’indicateur de développement financier utilisé, l’impact direct représenterait 8 à 21% de l'impact total. Les travaux de recherches précédents qui n'avaient pris en compte que l'impact indirect auraient donc sous-estimé les potentialités du système financier à contribuer à un objectif de réduction de la pauvreté.
