Abstract

English Abstract: The article intends to demonstrate the existence of a common thread in the reflection of Einaudi on the principle of balanced budget, which proceeds from "The public revenue in the state House of Savoy" (1907) until "On the interpretation of Article 81 of the [Italian] Constitution" (1948). Starting from the common reference of these two writings to the virtue of "prudence" -- of the "prince" and "good family father" -- and the associated analogy between the civil government and the government of the house (oikonomia), public and private, I show how in Einaudi's thought the principle of balanced budget is closely linked to the search of a good government and a principle of intergenerational equity.
