Abstract

Apart from their nutritional value, vegetables contribute to the farmer’s income when sold locally and to the country’s foreign exchange when sold in the export market. Vegetable production, packaging, processing and storage likewise provide employment to people. In the face of economic crisis, vegetable growing has been identified as an enterprise to meet the ever-increasing reliance on food purchases. This study presents a profile of the vegetable industry focusing on domestic production, consumption, external trade and market potentials, reviews past researches and gaps for the vegetable industry to identify strengths and weaknesses in the institutional structure of research and extension interface including physical and manpower investment and research implementation effort, and provides recommendation on the research and development agenda for the vegetable industry.
