Les élèves consacrent-ils suffisamment de temps à l’apprentissage ?

Abstract

Le facteur temps joue un rôle essentiel dans l’apprentissage. Ainsi, d’après le US Foreign Service Institute, un anglophone a besoin d’environ 600 heures pour acquérir un niveau de maîtrise professionnel en espagnol, en français ou en italien, de 1 100 heures en russe, et de 2 200 heures en arabe ou en chinois. À l’école, il faut du temps pour permettre aux enseignants et aux élèves de couvrir le programme, de revoir les notions, de faire et de recevoir des commentaires, et d’effectuer des activités pratiques. Toutefois, il ne suffit pas d’augmenter uniquement le temps d’apprentissage, par exemple en allongeant la journée d’école ou l’année scolaire ou en écourtant les pauses méridiennes, pour améliorer les résultats des élèves. La question est la suivante : l’augmentation du temps d’apprentissage favorise-t-elle la fatigue, l’ennui et le surmenage, ou bien au contraire l’amélioration de la productivité et de l’efficacité de l’apprentissage ?
