Faut-il enseigner les mathématiques complexes à tous les élèves ?

Abstract

L’offre à tous les élèves des mêmes possibilités d’apprentissage des mathématiques complexes constitue une stratégie clé dans la lutte contre la difficulté scolaire et pour le renforcement de l’équité. Les difficultés et l’anxiété que certains élèves éprouvent lorsqu’ils sont exposés à des contenus mathématiques complexes ne doivent pas servir de justification pour revoir les attentes à la baisse, orienter les élèves n’ayant pas encore acquis certaines compétences vers des programmes de mathématiques de niveau inférieur, ou appauvrir le contenu des enseignements. Les enseignants doivent avoir les ressources, les outils pédagogiques et les dispositions nécessaires à l’offre d’un enseignement efficace en classes hétérogènes et d’un soutien supplémentaire aux élèves en difficulté. Lorsque les enseignants choisissent de différencier leur enseignement en classe, ils peuvent opter pour des méthodes ne mettant pas encore davantage à l’écart les élèves en difficulté, telles que des formes flexibles de regroupement.
