Comment expliquer l'inégalité entre les sexes dans l'éducation ?

Abstract

Si l’enquête PISA révèle d’importants écarts de performance en compréhension de l’écrit entre les sexes – en faveur des filles – chez les élèves de 15 ans, ces écarts sont moindres lorsque ce sont les compétences en compréhension de l’écrit électronique qui sont évaluées. De fait, selon l’Évaluation des compétences des adultes, il n’existe pas d’écart de compétence significatif entre les sexes en littératie sur support électronique chez les 16-29 ans. Les garçons sont plus susceptibles d’être peu performants lorsqu’ils fréquentent un établissement dont l’effectif d’élèves est en grande partie défavorisé sur le plan socio-économique. Les filles – même les plus performantes – tendent à obtenir de moins bons résultats que les garçons lorsqu’il leur est demandé de penser scientifiquement, par exemple de formuler des situations de façon mathématique ou d’interpréter des phénomènes de manière scientifique. Les parents sont plus susceptibles d’attendre de leurs fils, plutôt que de leurs filles, qu’ils exercent une profession dans les domaines des sciences, de la technologie, de l’ingénierie et des mathématiques – même lorsque leurs fils et filles de 15 ans font jeu égal en mathématiques.
