Existe-t-il vraiment une « seconde chance » en matière d'éducation ?

Abstract

Si les compétences en compréhension de l’écrit des jeunes Canadiens de 15 ans constituent une variable prédictive importante de leurs compétences dans ce domaine à l’âge de 24 ans, les jeunes adultes ont encore la possibilité de faire évoluer ces compétences après la fin de la scolarité obligatoire. Durant la transition à l’âge adulte, on observe en général une amélioration des compétences en compréhension de l’écrit ; toutefois, ce constat vaut davantage pour certains groupes que pour d’autres. Les élèves issus de l’immigration, en particulier, parviennent à combler leur écart de performance entre 15 et 24 ans. La poursuite d’études post-secondaires formelles est associée de façon systématique et significative à l’amélioration des compétences en compréhension de l’écrit entre 15 et 24 ans.
