Abstract

––– Using data from the new ‘Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe’ (SHARE), we explore cross-national patterns of voluntary work among the older population in 10 countries. Our analysis reveals a clear spatial pattern of volunteering (with higher participation rates in Northern Europe and lower ones in the Mediterranean countries). There is no indication that the observed between-country differences are due to a different distribution or due to country-specific effects of relevant individual characteristics. Based on these findings, we sketch a program for future research, focussing on the role of various ‘regime typologies’ in the explanation of cross-country differences in voluntary engage-ment. We conclude with a brief discussion of policies and programs designed to encourage elder citizens to make use of their productive potential.
