Eficiencia, Cambio Productivo Y Cambio Técnico En Los Bancos Y Cajas De Ahorro Españolas: Un Análisis Frontera No Paramétrico

Abstract

This paper analyses the efficiency and productivity growth experienced by the Spanish Banking System over the 1986-92 period. The analysis uses a non parametric approach together with the Malmquist index to decompose the productivity growth into changes in efficiency (catching-up) and technological change. The changes in efficiency are in turn decomposed into changes in technical pure efficiency and changes in scale efficiency. The results point out a higher efficiency and a higher improvement of productivity in savings banks as compared to private commercial banks. These productivity improvements are mainly due to technical progress in savings banks and to catching-up private commercial banks. Este trabajo analiza la eficiencia y el cambio productivo ocurrido en el Sistema Bancario Español en el período 1986-92. La eficiencia y el cambio productivo se estima utilizando la técnica no paramétrica DEA y el índice de Malmquist, que permite descomponer el cambio productivo en cambios en la eficiencia (catcbing-up) y cambio técnico. Igualmente, se realiza una descomposición de los cambios en la eficiencia en términos de cambios en la eficiencia técnica pura y de escala. Los resultados obtenidos indican una superior eficiencia y mayores mejoras de productividad en las cajas que en los bancos. Estas mejoras de productividad se deben principalmente a progreso técnico en el caso de las cajas de ahorro y a catcbing-up en el caso de los bancos nacionales.
