Abstract

This policy brief examines the role of Advanced Manufacturing (AM) in bolstering Europe's competitiveness. It discusses the application of the Digital Techno-Economic ecoSystem (DGTES) methodology to the study of the AM industry, responding to a call for a more systematic approach and a novel methodology to define, identify and study the AM industry. The brief provides fresh insights into the AM global landscape, comparing the EU's performance with major players like China and the US, and explores the industry's structure through the lens of industrial ecosystems. Concluding that AM is essential for the EU's industrial competitiveness, the brief recommends the implementation of targeted policies, strategic investments, and international collaboration to foster AM technology diffusion and adoption, enhancing the EU's position in the AM global industry.
