Cuando el gasto en la educación importa: Un análisis empírico de información internacional reciente

Abstract

Analizamos las decrecientes correlaciones entre el gasto en educación y los resultados del aprendizaje para abordar dos preguntas fundamentales: ¿Los sistemas educativos con diferentes niveles de gasto en la educación tienen diferentes niveles de rendimiento de los estudiantes? Si es así, ¿a qué cantidad de gasto en educación difiere la relación entre el aumento de los gastos y los logros de los estudiantes? Al utilizar información de un gran grupo de países de todo el mundo, encontramos que la asociación entre el gasto en educación y el desempeño de los estudiantes en matemáticas es estadísticamente significativa entre los sistemas que gastan por debajo de US$8.000 por estudiante al año (en paridad del poder adquisitivo). Según el control de los ingresos medios (PIB) per cápita y la desigualdad de ingresos, nuestros cálculos sugieren que el gasto en educación está asociado con un aumento en el rendimiento de los estudiantes solamente entre los sistemas que pasan por debajo de este valor, con el rendimiento promedio de aproximadamente 14 puntos más altos en la escala PISA por cada US$1.000 adicionales gastados.
