Competencia en el mercado bancario del crédito en Chile

Abstract

La creciente concentración y las altas tasas de rentabilidad que ha experimentado la industria bancaria chilena en las últimas décadas han dado lugar a un intenso debate acerca de la intensidad de la competencia entre los bancos. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo determinar la intensidad de la competencia en dicho mercado. Para ello se estima un modelo estructural de oferta y demanda de crédito utilizando el método de corrección de errores. Los resultados señalan que no se puede rechazar la hipótesis de que existe algún grado de colusión en los mercados bancarios de créditos comerciales y de consumo en Chile. No obstante, dicha colusión se daría en un nivel de precios inferiores al de maximización conjunta de utilidades o monopólico. Cabe mencionar que ni el número de participantes ni el grado de concentración en el mercado bancario de crédito son indicadores fidedignos del grado de competencia en dicho mercado.
