Abstract

"For the past decade, the number of older shift workers more than doubled. The reasons for an increasing number of older shift workers are the extension of shift work in the service sector as well as the ageing of the German baby boom cohorts. The German cohort study 'lidA - leben in der Arbeit', a survey among the baby boom cohorts born in 1959 and 1965, shows that shift work is often associated with health problems. Accordingly, shift workers report worse physical health than employees with normal working hours. However, the negative association between shift work and health in older working age can mostly be attributed to individual job position, workload and the lack of appreciation."
