Pauvreté économique en agriculture au cours des années 1980

Abstract

Si l'on applique aux ménages d'agriculteurs à titre exclusif ou principal la définition économique de la pauvreté relative, apparaît-il que celle-ci concerne encore, au cours des années 1980, une fraction significative de ces ménages, bien qu'ils soient de moins en moins nombreux ? D'une part, si on reprend les facteurs explicatifs d'une telle pauvreté, on voit que ceux-ci sont toujours à l'œuvre, en partie à cause d'un chômage croissant. Il ne s'est pas produit de changement assez important ou rapide dans les ajustements nécessités par les évolutions des rapports de prix. D'autre part, à défaut de preuve directe, il existe de fortes présomptions de la persistance de bas ou très bas revenus totaux par tête. Si la détention d'actifs patrimoniaux relativement élevés procure des revenus immatériels, elle ne permet pas d'éviter les privations de bien-être matériel au cours de la vie active. Nombre de femmes continuent à se détourner des agriculteurs établis sur de petites ou moyennes exploitations.
