Abstract

The creation of firms and its territorial relationships. The issue of the creation of firms and its territorial relationships has interested regional economists for over twenty years. One particular topic has received special attention, namely what are the factors explaining regional variation in firm formation rates. An explanatory framework has been built gradually involving contributions from other fields of economics, in particular from labour, industrial and spatial economics, with for example arguments relating to occupational choice including self-employment, competition and multiplier effect, or agglomeration economies. Additionally, many hypotheses have been raised about the effect of one or another particular resource involved in the differentiation of territories. This article provides a summary of the explanatory framework and questions its ability to account for the dynamics of firm creation and regional development. Theory appears highly fragmented and static, and hardly able to explain satisfactorily the dynamic interrelationships involved. Some ideas are suggested to move further ahead in this direction.
