Normalisation et gestion des entreprises : une approche conventionnaliste

Abstract

Cet article a pour objet d'expliquer comment la normalisation de type ISO est rationalisée comme une nécessité imposée au management moderne et devient elle-même moyen de rationaliser des réorganisations dans les entreprises. La théorie des conventions est utilisée comme support et les textes managériaux sur la normalisation comme matériau de l'analyse. On explicite alors les trois niveaux d'enracinement de la normalisation : d'abord elle véhicule une conviction partagée sur les contraintes qu'impose l'environnement économique. En second lieu, elle participe à la modification du gouvernement de l'entreprise et permet de rationaliser ses transformations. Enfin, elle intervient comme système de mesure et d'évaluation des pratiques nouvelles. Ce triple enracinement repéré, la grille de lecture conventionnaliste permet de conclure que la normalisation est autant un système de rationalisation qu'une technique, permettant l'un et l'autre des modifications structurelles sous-jacentes des entreprises.
