Abstract

Although a successful concept in the 1990's, no more management writing deals with the concept of participative management at the present time. Yet, participation has not disappeared but the participative approach has integrated some particular working methods and is no more put forward as a main characteristic of the organization. In this article, we treat of the reasons of this disappearance. Justified by pieces of scientific works arranged despite very different ways of thinking and ambitions, the concept has been commonly perceived as a "one best way". This representation has created illusions, which could not be put into practice. Moreover, the foremen who have to apply the concept had to face practical and psychological problems. Finally, the concept has brought discredit to high-level management.
